Art + Water was founded by Dave Eggers and JD Beltran on a shared conviction: that San Francisco thriving depends on giving artists the time, space, and community to do their best work, freely, and without condition.
Both longtime Bay Area figures, they brought decades of experience building institutions that put artists first. But their vision extended well beyond artists themselves, to the families, workers, neighbors, and visitors who love this city, a true civic living room where the act of making art becomes something shared, witnessed, and celebrated together.
At the heart of that vision is a belief that the how is just as revelatory as the what. Art + Water’s exhibitions are invitations into process, into the thinking and the doing, into the messy and luminous space between idea and object. You don’t just see what artists have made. You begin to understand how, and why, and what it might feel like to make something yourself.
They also set out to offer something the Bay Area has been steadily losing: a serious path for emerging artists that doesn’t require stunning debt or leaving the city they love, an atelier model built on mentorship, community, and access, offered entirely free of charge.
This is a place made for all of us. We can’t wait to welcome you in.
